BETWEEN THE IMAGES

How can the photographic image be a place for dialogue and conflict between the positions of the artists and dominating political, historical and aesthetical structures? In what way can we discuss the image in terms of agency - as an act or intervention? How can the image act and function in a time when many visual strategies have been disarmed or canonized? With these questions as a starting point, the project Between the Images presented works in which artists explicitly use or relate to the photographic image to highlight or renegotiate political, social or aesthetic conventions.

BETWEEN THE IMAGES
Imaginable Experiences for Future Memories
Curated by Petra Bauer, Kim Einarsson and Helena Holmberg
Edited by Karolina Pahlén

Essays by
John Akomfrah, Magnus Bärtås, Hedwig Saxenhuber, Felix Vogel, Raluca Voinea

Participants
Chantal Akerman, John Akomfrah, Guy Ben-Ner, James Benning, Wang Bing, Black Audio Film Collective /Reece Auguiste, Magnus Bärtås, Nanna Debois Buhl, Andrea Faciu, Harun Farocki, Ion Grigorescu, Ivan Grubanov, Emma Hedditch, Daniel Knorr, Runo Lagomarsino, Jill Magi, The Otolith Group, Annika Ruth Persson, Lukasz Ronduda, Anri Sala, Hedwig Saxenhuber, Ines Schaber, Miri Segal, Simon Sheikh, Fernando E. Solanas and Octavio Getino, Valie Export, Alex Villar, Felix Vogel, Raluca Voinea

The project Between the Images, of which this book is partly documentation and partly continuation, was presented in Stockholm 2008 within the frame of Xposeptember, a biannual art event focusing on photographic image. Some of the discussions which arose from the works in the exhibitions, and in the related programme, are in this publication allowed to expand and develop in the form of new essays and contributions by the project's participants.

A major influence for the project has been the legacy of an essayistic approach in moving images. The subjective perspective and the associative narrative often used by filmmakers in this tradition could be seen as a way of negotiating the dominant structures from an aesthetical as well as a political viewpoint. Using the essay as a point of departure the project also wanted to put forward some related methods used in order to discuss political and social structures.

Lecture
On the occasion of the book release, Xposeptember has invited Felix Vogel, who is also one of the writers, to give a lecture. In his talk Felix Vogel will try to examine the potentiality of the image as agent and how we can understand images as a form of agency. The three different cases he will take into consideration are all, more or less, connected to the film essay: Magnus Bärtås' video essay as a take on Chris Marker's film Le Mystère Koumiko, Harun Farocki's and Andrei Ujica's Videogramme einer Revolution as well as Jean-Luc Godard's and Anne-Marie Miéville's project for Mozambique. All of those examples shed a very different light on the way stories and histories influence each other and what happens when images start to act.

Felix Vogel
Researcher and curator based in Berlin and Konstanz. Most recently, he was appointed curator of the 4. Bucharest Biennale in 2010.

Between the Images
Presented in collaboration with Cinemateket of the Swedish Film Institute, Iaspis, Index - The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation, the Romanian Cultural Institute of Stockholm and wip:konsthall and with support from the Swedish National Council for Cultural Affairs, The Culture Administration of Stockholm and Stockholm County Council.

The Between the Images publication has been made possible with support from the abovementioned institutions and in co-production with the Romanian Cultural Institute of Stockholm and Iaspis.

PRINTED PROJECT 12: CIRCULATION
Curated/Edited by Katya Sander
November, 2009

Contributers

In the light of the recent crash in the global financial system, this issue of Printed Project takes a timely look at the notion of 'circulation' - not only circulation of goods, bodies, knowledge, ideas, images and money, i.e. the movement of certain forms - but also, and maybe more so, an idea of circulation as a form in itself.

Curator/editor Katya Sander has taken her cue from a number of recent sociologists and anthropologists, who have sought to understand and describe the market "as one form of circulation central to western imaginary of modernity". As Sander notes "along with the market as one such matrix for western modernity, the notion of the public sphere and the idea of the nation state can also be understood as seminal forms of circulation for western modernity and the ways in which it is understood and imagined."

About Katya Sander
Katya Sander (born 1970 Copenhagen) lives and works in Berlin and Copenhagen. Sanders most recent solo exhibitions include Production of Future. A Science Fiction About Counting at Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, TIFO (event) at Generator in Trondheim, and The Most Complicated Machines are Made of Words at Museum Moderner Kunst (MuMoK) in Vienna. Moreover, Sanders work has been shown in group shows such as in Documenta12 (9 Scripts From a Nation at War, with Andrea Geyer, Sharon Hayes, Ashley Hunt & David Thorne), Kunstraum Universität Lüneburg, Rooseum in Malmö, Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, Neue Berliner Kunstverein, CCA Watts Institute in San Francisco, ICCA Bucharest, Artists Space in New York, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Musée de L'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Kunsthalle Wien, Aarhus Art Museum, MIGROS Museum, and others. She has worked in various collaborative constellations. Sanders writing on art, visual cultures, architecture and feminism has been published internationally in various books, magazines and journals. Together with Simon Sheikh she is a series editor of OE-Critical Readers in Visual Cultures, published with b_books, Berlin.

ICI | EXPERIMENTAL GEOGRAPHY
Experimental Geography explores the distinctions between geographical study and artistic experience of the earth, as well as the juncture where the two realms collide (and possibly make a new field altogether). This lavishly illustrated book features more than a dozen maps; artwork by Francis Alÿs, Alex Villar, and Yin Xiuzhen; and recent projects by The Center for Land Use Interpretation, the Raqs Media Collective, and the Center for Urban Pedagogy.

The collection is framed by essays by bestselling author Trevor Paglen, Jeffrey Kastner, and editor Nato Thompson.
